Understanding Diamond Value

The value of every diamond is determined by the 4Cs — developed by GIA. Learn what makes your diamond valuable.

Cut — The Most Important Factor

Cut is the most critical factor in a diamond’s beauty and value. It refers to how well its facets interact with light — not the shape. A well-cut diamond displays exceptional brilliance, fire, and scintillation.

GIA grades cut from Excellent to Poor. Even a diamond with perfect color and clarity can appear dull if poorly cut.

Excellent
Maximum brilliance. Reflects nearly all light.
Very Good
Reflects most light. Excellent value.
Good
Reflects majority of light. Still attractive.
Fair
Significant light escapes.
Poor
Most light escapes. Noticeably dull.

Color — Less Is More

Diamond color refers to the absence of color. GIA’s scale: D (colorless, most valuable) to Z (light yellow/brown). D-F colorless, G-J near colorless, K-M faint, N-Z light.

Clarity — Nature’s Fingerprint

Clarity measures inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Fewer = higher grade and value. GIA has 11 grades from FL to I3.

FL
Flawless
No inclusions at 10×
IF
Internally Flawless
No inclusions, minor blemishes
VVS1-2
Very Very Slightly Incl.
Difficult to see at 10×
VS1-2
Very Slightly Included
Minor, visible at 10× with effort
SI1-2
Slightly Included
Noticeable at 10×
I1-I3
Included
Visible to naked eye

Carat Weight — Size Matters

One carat = 0.2 grams. Prices increase exponentially. "Magic sizes" (0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00, 3.00, 5.00ct) see disproportionate price jumps.

Popular Diamond Shapes

Round brilliant is the most popular and valuable cut, representing over 75% of all diamonds sold. Fancy shapes offer unique aesthetics and can provide excellent value at larger carat weights.

Blue
Among the rarest. Colored by boron.
Green
Natural radiation. Very rare.
Orange
Pure orange is very rare.
Red

Why Certification Matters

A certificate is an independent lab assessment verifying the 4Cs. Certification verifies quality; it doesn’t determine value. We accept diamonds with and without certification.
